Shota Yamauchi

Central Ishinomaki Area

Born 1992 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Film and New Media in 2016. Selected as a finalist in "TERRADA ART AWARD 2021" and won the Takahiro Kaneshima Award and the Audience Award.
Major exhibitions include the solo exhibition "Ballet Mécanique" (RICOH ART GALLERY, 2022), the solo exhibition "Second Texture" (Gallery TOH, 2021), and "Ripple Across the Water 2021 (Watari-um Museum of Contemporary Art, 2021), "The Museum in the Multi-layered World - Welcome to Hyper ICC" (NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC], 2021), "TERRADA ART AWARD 2021 Finalists Exhibition" (Terada Warehouse G3-6F, 2021), "Roppongi Crossing 2019: Connexions" (Mori Art Museum, 2019), etc.

Shota Yamauchi endeavors to fuse digital technology and sculptural imagination in his practice, combining technology-based digital imagery with primitive materials such as the body and clay. “Is the skin-colored creature shown on the large screen really a human being or gorilla? This creature keeps putting on and taking off its own skin like you would with clothes, and shows it off like someone performing in a strip show. I see a similar mentality in communication today, where people enjoy the spectacle of exposing their private parts and behaving in an extreme manner.” (Shota Yamauchi)
