Artwork Exhibition Area

Central Ishinomaki

In the central part of the city of Ishinomaki, artworks are shown at a former public bathhouse which was loved by locals, a skate link, and the Hiyoriyama Park and Ishinomori Manga Museum visited by many tourists coming to Ishinomaki. Although the actual city center moved to northwest around Ishinomaki Kanan IC, the central Ishinomaki city is being regenerated as new art spaces are built one by one.

Onagawa

Onagawa, which is newly added to the exhibition area, is accentuated by Shigeru Ban-designed station building with public bath facilities and the city designed for people to be able to see the ocean. The works are interspersed within walking distance from the Onagawa Station to the sea through the shopping street. The Onagawa Port which made use of the mouth of Onagawa Bay is a good natural port and you might see some anglers.

Momonoura

Momonoura, which is the first exhibition area in the natural settings of the Oshika Peninsula, is a fishing village characterized by oyster culture. The exhibition site is the former Oginohama Elementary School that was closed in 2018. Found in the school yard and around the sea embankment are works from the past RAFs as well. Momonoura Village, RAF’s offcial facilities of accommodation and learning, is located nearby.

Oginohama

Walking along the path through the oyster culture farm, one will find the White Shell Beach, all whitened with oyster shells. Here you find White Deer (Oshika), the work by Kohei Nawa in RAF2017, along with the Reborn-Art Dining and eatery “Hama-saisai,” and added to this melting pot of art and eating are new scenery and a place for making acquaintances.

Kozumi

This area is located around the middle of the Oshika Peninsula and is surrounded by the calm sea and the mountains. At FERMENTO, the venison processing facility, the hunter Nozomu Onodera is trying to make use of deer meat, which is deemed as a noxious animal, as a local resource. Artist Lieko Shiga who presented her work in Kozumi in RAF2019 is continuing her project here.

Ayukawa

The southern tip of the Oshika Peninsula can be reached in a one-hour drive from central Ishinomaki. The seascape facing Kinkasan Island, one of the three hallowed grounds in Oshu region is worth seeing. The open sea off the Kinkasan Island is where the Kuroshio current and the Oyashio current collide, and it is one of the three major fishing grounds in the world. Ayukawa used to flourish as a whaling station. In this RAF summer session, only two RAF2019 works are shown.

CURATOR
Kenji Kubota
After a curatorial career at the Ueno Royal Museum and Contemporary Art Center, in Art Tower Mito, Kenji Kubota became an independent curator in 2006. As Associate Professor of Art at the University of Tsukuba, he participated in the university’s Creative Reconstruction project from 2012 to 2016. Cooperating with artists, universities, corporations, and other actors, he employs a variety of cultural formats in exploring the potential functions of art in social systems including politics and the economy. He has curated several exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including “X-Color/Graffiti in Japan” (Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Tower Mito, 2005), “Money Talk” (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, 2007-2008), “Roppongi Crossing 2010: Can There Be Art” (Mori Art Museum, 2010), “Don’t Follow the Wind” (inside the Non-Visitor Center, Fukushima, 2015-), and “Asian Art Biennale” (National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, 2017-2018). Kubota is currently a part-time lecturer at Gakushuin Women’s College and holds a directorship at the Kawamura Arts and Cultural Foundation.

Festival where people share imagination

The spirit of altruism is impossible unless you can imagine how others feel.

When the world was shaken up by great disasters, wars and diseases, many people, while overwhelmed by a feeling of despair, had a ray of hope for the change into altruistic society. When the earthquake and tsunami hit the Tohoku Region ten years ago, a lot of people probably remember how people around the world supported the altruistic spirit and talked lively about how the altruistic society should be in the future.

As time has passed, however, such hope and awareness are gradually forgotten because in the present self-centered society, it is regarded efficient and better to forget about others’ pain and suffering or not to think about them.

The festival has been effective as the way to countervail such oblivion and inability to think. The festival has a function to let us be freed from daily lives, think about ancestors and the deceased, and enourage our imagination from the present to the future. Reborn-Art Festival which resulted in the disaster is a festival to go against oblivion and for us to imagine our world at present and in the future.

The artists, viewers and staff participating in this festival imagine how the future world should be through a variety of artworks such as peaceful and equal society with diversities, realization of rich symbiosis among the humankind, nature, living and inanimate beings. They gather at one point to share them, and after the festival is over, they go back to their own societies. Collective sharing of imagination for the future world—it might be the essence of this Reborn-Art Festival which is similar to prayer.

When “imagination” that was taken home in the real world by each person infiltrates the society gradually, it would be possible to realize the change in society from being selfish to altruist.
