Tadashi Kawamata

Central Ishinomaki Area

Since participating in Venice Biennale in 1982, the aritst is working as international artist. His works shows that the working process to create art is a part of the artwork. In his large installations, the artist uses woods and the newly discovered space in the work becomes the artwork. In his work, movement of the audience also plays an important role and is the process of the creation of the work. Drawings or models of his installations are not merely showing his plans, but are individual works which content each of his working process, and are becoming more popular nowadays.

Ishinomaki Tower, 2022

Tadashi Kawamata is an artist who has been internationally active since his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1982. He shows the process of creating art and the way we perceive space as the work of art itself, in which even movements of viewers become part of that process. “I will assemble a tower on a flat site constructed after the earthquake. I thought that a tower rising up into the sky will reflect the strong will of the people who have continued to live in the area. The tower will be lit up throughout the exhibition. Anyone can witness the construction process, which is open to the public. It will take several years for the project to be completed.” (Tadashi Kawamata)
